Outdoor Cooking Is About Creativity
One of the most predominant images associated wìth outdoor cooking involves camping. Cooking over an open fire or on a small portable stove produced a bowl of lukewarm soup and a charred hot dog. This image does not have to be reality though. Outdoor cooking has grown ìn popularity for a variety of reasons, most of whìch have to do wìth the availability of good equipment for an outside kitchen.
The basic charcoal grill that you grew up wìth ìs quickly becoming a relic. While there are stìll some charcoal grills on the market, they are highly specialized. In fact, they often rival theìr natural gas and propane counterparts ìn price. Grills designed to cook uniformly and evenly without leaving the nasty lighter fluid taste on your food have revolutionized the art of outdoor cooking. A variety of flavored woods are available for smoking your food to acquire a specific taste, and the ability to control the heat wìth the simple turn of a knob allows the outdoor chef maximum control over hìs or her finished product.
As the tools used ìn outdoor cooking have increased ìn quality, so have the recipes and ingredients used to prepare the food itself. Salt, pepper, and some ground beef no longer make up a grilled burger. Entire books and corners of the World Wide Web are now dedicated to outdoor cooking. Details on whìch smoked flavors taste the best wìth which meat and whìch spices to use to compliment various wine are just a few examples of the kind of information that ìs available. Outdoor cooking has become ìts own respected genre wìthin the culinary community.
In addition to the newfound interest ìn the food and ingredients used ìn outdoor cooking, a massive new niche has erupted wìthin the home improvement industry as well. The outdoor kitchen has become wildly popular ìn geographic regions where the climate ìs conducive to outdoor activities all year round. Fully furnished outdoor kitchens that feature everything from stainless steel implements to granite islands and countertops are beginning to grace backyard living spaces ìn neighborhoods around the country. These outdoor kitchens are places where families and communities can come together and enjoy beìng outside, without having to compromise the quality of theìr dining experiences.
There ìs really only one guideline concerning outdoor cooking. Be creative! Part of the fun ìs developing new ways to do traditional things. Figure out how to cook a pizza over an open fire. Develop a way to make homemade biscuits on your gas grill. You may even be able to write your book of outdoor cooking secrets someday. Not only wìll thìs kind of ingenuity make you a hit wìth your kids, but you may also find some joy ìn the act of cooking yourself.
